TALKING SHOP: Mark Edwards, commissioning editor for Arte France, reveals how the channel has worked to turn its ratings fortunes around in the past two years.

In 2011, Arte was a channel French people knew about and liked but rarely watched, says Edwards. What was needed was a strategy for converting that reputation into ratings.

Edwards runs through the six slots for which he commissions programming in the areas of culture, current affairs, history and investigation.

He also talks about the network’s successful feature doc Sand Wars, and how it brought a potentially ‘dry’ subject to life for a mainstream audience.
