The Italian Rivera, summer of 1926. The liberating influence of Italy’s culture, climate, and cuisine are enchanting, even at this time of global upheaval. At the stunningly beautiful, recently opened Hotel Portofino, its co-proprietor Bella Ainsworth is already short of staff and money. Her guests, such as the demanding Lady Latchmere, are hard to please. Signor Danioni, a corrupt local politician, threatens to drag Bella into the red-hot political cauldron of Mussolini’s Italy.

And on top of it all, Bella tries to coax her wounded son, Lucian, and her widowed daughter, Alice, towards health and happiness in the traumatic aftermath of the Great War. But she has to rely on herself: Bella’s aristocratic but caddish husband, Cecil, is only obsessed with arranging an advantageous marriage for Lucian to secure the future of the family’s estate back in England, and with finding the money to pay for his dilettante lifestyle. Soon, Bella will discover how far he is prepared to go.
