The mechanisms and personalities that powered German dramatist Bertolt Brecht’s creative production shed light on a particular genius. A genius also unimaginable without external force. While Brecht’s first love may have been just an innocent muse, his second wife, actress Helene Weigel, his secretary and others must be described as collaborators.

The cinematic stage is set with chronological pieces of Brecht’s life beginning with World War One and running through the cabaret-like tumult of the Weimar Republic, foreign exile and Nazi Germany, reconstruction and a rare picture of an equally western success story from the other side of occupied Europe as Brecht and his entourage built their iconic Ensemble theater in the East Berlin of the German Democratic Republic.
