Autumn 1923 after. Germany is broke, the economic crisis leads to hyperinflation and hunger. In those days, 24-year-old journalist Paula Schlier sneaks undercover into the editorial office of the "Völkischer Beobachter," the NSDAP's fighting paper, and gets a picture of Hitler's movement. She watches as propagandist Hitler and his party coup against Germany's democratic government on November 8, 1923. The attempt to seize power ends in a hail of bullets from the Bavarian police. It still fails, but within a few years it will bring down democracy. The film shows Paula Schlier, a courageous woman who experiences and documents the coup first hand. She gives a first-hand account of the course of the dramatic events of the failed coup d'état.
