This documentary journey turns our image of Africa upside down: mobile payment in remote villages, drones over farmland and block chain technology for hospitals. A creative start-up scene in high-tech hubs from Nairobi to Kumasi is coming up with technical innovations that inspire worldwide.

In the documentary Digital Africa – Innovation Changes Minds (52 '), re: publica curator Géraldine de Bastion goes on a journey of discovery through the innovation scene of the African continent. She meets inventors, founders and high tech nerds in Kenya, Rwanda and Ghana and visits innovation centers and startups that give people in slums access to clean gas, build Africa-compatible tablets for schools and experimental kits for future engineers and programmers.
African inventors experiment with blockchain technology, present apps that provide access to physicians or educational content. Mobile charging stations with Internet access fix supply problems in villages, 3D printers produce spare parts.

"Over the next few years, we need to transform from technology consumers to technology producers," says Jorge Appiah, head of the Ghanaian innovation center Kumasi Hive.

Many inventors devote themselves to fixing social problems. But, says a manager at the Innovation Center in Nairobi, "these are the topics at hand here".
