Science Channel GM Etkind departs

Discovery veteran Marc Etkind is leaving the US factual giant after a four-year stint as general manager of its cable network Science Channel.

Discovery confirmed the news on Tuesday. Etkind’s time with the broadcaster also included a spell as general manager of Destination America and VP of development at Animal Planet.

While overseeing Science, Etkind rebooted classic format BattleBots, returned MythBusters host Adam Savage to the screen with Savage Builds and commissioned shows including Mysteries of the Abandoned.

The channel recorded its highest ever ratings, but Discovery is in the midst of a serious headcount reduction to cut costs across the board.

Scott Lewers, executive VP of multi-platform programming and digital media, is expanding his role to include some of Etkind’s responsibilities.

Lewers joined Discovery in 2007 and prior to that was senior director of historical programming at A+E’s factual cablenet History. Before that he was president of production outfit Pinball Productions.

News of Etkind’s departure was first reported by Deadline.
