Schitt’s Creek won nine Emmys

Schitt’s Creek, Succession and Watchmen won multiple gongs at the 2020 Emmy Awards, which were held virtually last night.

The 72nd Emmy Awards were broadcast live from a mostly empty Staples Center in LA on ABC, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, with many winners making their acceptance speeches from home.

Schitt’s Creek, which recently ended its six-season run on Pop TV, won nine prizes, becoming the first basic cable series to win in the outstanding comedy series category.

Its other awards included outstanding writing for a comedy series for Daniel Levy, who was the most decorated individual on the night with four awards, while its lead actors Eugene Levy and Catherine O’Hara won in the comedy acting categories.

HBO’s Succession, which bagged seven awards, was named outstanding drama series, while Jeremy Strong won in the lead actor in a drama series category for his role in the show and creator Jesse Armstrong took home the award in best writing for a drama.

Another HBO show, Watchmen, won the most awards on the night, its 11-gong haul including outstanding limited series and outstanding writing for a limited series, movie or dramatic special.

The WarnerMedia-owned cablenet won 30 awards in total, with Netflix coming behind it with 21, for shows including Unorthodox and Ozark, while Disney+’s The Mandalorian took home seven awards.

Other winners included RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1, which was named outstanding competition programme, and Zendaya, who won in the lead actress in a drama series category for her performance in HBO’s Euphoria.
