SBS Oz revamps on-demand

Australian pubcaster SBS is relaunching its on-demand and catch-up platform next week, adding a raft of exclusive programming including feature documentaries and previews of US drama series.

Bosch

US drama Bosch will preview exclusively on SBS On Demand

The free, advertiser-supported SBS On Demand will offer more than 4,000 hours of content, including 600 movies, from Monday June 29.

More than 350 feature docs are being added to the platform, including Alex Gibney’s Sinatra: All or Nothing at All and Mr Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown, plus Freakonomics, Gonzo and Finding Fela!. The new factual content includes the first two seasons of Keo Films’ Skint.

Season three of Sundance TV’s Rectify will premiere on July 10, a month before its terrestrial debut.

Other offerings will include an exclusive preview of US crime series Bosch on July 22 and the first episode of season three of Masters of Sex on July 30.

The forthcoming movie line-up includes Australian drama The Rocket, martial arts titles The Way of the Dragon and IP Man, French films Amelie and Rust & Bone, and US indie features Tiny Furniture and Frances Ha.

SBS On Demand is available on 22 platforms, more than any other Australian broadcaster.

Marshall Heald, director of TV and online, said: “SBS On Demand is a unique offering in the competitive subscription streaming market. As audience consumption habits continue to change, SBS On Demand is central to SBS’s commitment to exploring and celebrating diversity through inspired entertainment using cutting-edge technology.”

This week the Australian senate rejected legislation that would have allowed SBS to double the number of ads shown in primetime, which would have generated an additional A$28.5m (US$22m) in revenue over four years.

SBS had warned of cuts to programming and services if the bill were defeated. It said it will provide an impact report to the federal government and review its overall funding before outlining its next moves.
