S4C set for $4m digital spending boost

Welsh pubcaster S4C has committed to spending an additional £3m (US$4.2m) over the next three years to develop the channel’s digital strategy.

Huw Jones

S4C chairman Huw Jones announced the plans to up the spend on digital content at an event held in conjunction with Royal Television Society Wales in Cardiff on Thursday.

The announcement came in response to the review of S4C published by the UK’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport at the end of March.

“We plan to spend £3m over the next three years on the digital strategy in particular – in addition to what is already being spent. This is a greater amount, as a percentage of income, than that spent by Channel 4, for example,” said Jones.

“We will move from providing a single channel that must include something for everyone, to being able to offer a personalised service to individual viewers. This is the way forward.”

Areas singled out for improvement and expansion include the online viewing platform S4C Clic, which will feature a greater variety of content covering longform, shortform and midform.

Preparations are currently underway for submitting the channel’s plan of action to the DCMS by July 2018.

S4C last year commissioned a flurry of shortform content aimed at 16-34s that premiered on Facebook and YouTube for its online brand Hansh. Jones said that the aim is “to build on this model, along with developing new platforms as well as the current service.”
