RTL Germany has become the first international broadcaster to commission a local version of Warner Bros’ 500 Questions format.

The show was originally created for US broadcaster ABC by Emmy-winning executive producer Mark Burnett (Shark Tank, Survivor, The Voice) and Warner Bros president of unscripted and alternative television Mike Darnell (The Voice, The Bachelor).

Warner Bros International Television Production Germany will produce the primetime series for RTL, while Alies Glees will executive produce.

RTL has aired classic quizshow format Who Wants to be a Millionaire? for the last 16 years and has now added 500 Questions to its slate.

The format sees contestants compete to achieve the seemingly impossible task of answering 500 of the most difficult general knowledge questions ever devised. Three wrong answers in a row eliminates the player.

Andrew Zein, senior VP creative for format development and sales at Warner Bros International Television Production, said: “500 Questions is a pure primetime gameshow – entertaining, accessible to play, starring big characters and set against a stunning piece of set design.”

Sales of the format are handled by Warner Bros International Television Production, with the finished programme distributed globally by Warner Bros Worldwide Television Distribution.
