RTÉjr tunes in to Critters TV

Critters TV is set to air on RTÉjr from October

Irish broadcaster RTÉjr is on board the first comedy animation series from Dublin studio Turnip & Duck, which is set to pitch the show at Cartoon Forum next week.

Fifteen episodes of Critters TV have so far been funded with the support of RTÉjr, Screen Ireland, The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland and the Section 481 tax credit.

The show features 2D animated animals watching live-action nature documentaries, with narration provided by Irish actor Barry McGovern.

The first batch of 11-minute episodes are set to air on RTÉjr from late October. Turnip & Duck is aiming to raise additional funds for a 52×11′ series from meetings with potential investors at Cartoon Forum in Toulouse next week.

The episodes are aimed at a co-viewing and family audience and have been produced in association with Daily Madness Productions, which provided design and animation services, and Crossing The Line Productions, which licensed an archive of Irish wildlife footage to the production.

Colm Tobin, coproducer and co-writer of the series, said: “We all grew up enjoying the brilliance of David Attenborough as he revealed incredible and interesting facts about the animal kingdom. We imagined how the animals themselves would react to seeing themselves on TV.

“Critters TV is a fun and entertaining educational series, using world-class live-action nature footage adapted for a kids’ audience and offering a breathtaking backdrop to the 2D animated comedy taking place around it.”

Critters TV is created, written, produced and directed by Aidan O’Donovan and Tobin along with creative director Ian Benjamin Kenny. The team has also been behind puppet-based comedy show Brain Freeze, produced for CBBC and RTÉ, and sold globally by Aardman Rights.
