Rebellion, to be filmed in the Dublin area over the coming months, is set over three weeks at Easter 1916 when Irish republicans attempted to end British rule of the country, triggering the beginning of a campaign for independence.

Rebellion is produced by Zodiak Media Ireland and Touchpaper Television in association with Element Pictures. Zodiak Rights will distribute the programme internationally.

Colin Teevan, who wrote recent RTÉ drama Charlie, will pen the series, to be helmed by Finnish director Aku Louhimies.

Jane Gogan, head of drama at RTÉ Television, said: “Rebellion will tell personal stories that are intertwined with the political events of the time. However, it is a drama, not a history lesson and our story is told from the perspectives of a group of fictional characters who live through the political events of 1916.”

Rebellion will air on RTÉ1 in 2016.
