Tuomo Korpinen joins Rovio in a new role

Angry Birds creator Rovio has hired a DreamWorks Animation (DWA) and former Walt Disney Company exec to lead and expand its media business.

Tuomo Korpinen joins the Finnish company as president of both Rovio Animation, which produces animated series based on the games company’s IP, and Blue Bird Distribution, its US subsidiary.

Based out of LA, Korpinen will also take on the role of global executive VP of Rovio’s media business, giving him responsibility for all media-related activity and property at the firm.

His arrival comes after Nick Dorra, Rovio’s head of content strategy, left in April following four years with the company to join New York-based start-up Thirty Labs.

A spokeswoman for Rovio told C21 that Korpinen’s role is new to the company.

The Angry Birds app launched in 2009 and went on to become the most downloaded game of all time.

An Angry Birds feature film is due to be released next year, while the numerous animated series based on the game were recently picked up for international distribution by UK-based Cake Entertainment.

Helsinki-based Rovio says its online distribution outlet, ToonsTV, has attracted billions of views since it launched in March 2013.

Korpinen will report to Rovio CEO Pekka Rantala, who joined the company at the beginning of this year.

Korpinen was most recently head of international TV sales for DWA’s feature-film animation slate.

Prior to joining DWA in 2013, he spent six years in multiple roles at the Mouse House, latterly heading up the business development team for the film studio business globally.

“My focus will be on continuing to drive the business further, maximising franchise value and expanding the company’s commercial footprint in the media sector in both existing and new innovative ways,” said Korpinen.
