The firm behind movies including Free State of Jones with Matthew McConaughey and Colossal with Anne Hathaway has signed a first-look deal with Garcia for TV and film projects.

Garcia will report to Route One CEO Russell Levine, who founded the company in 2009, and aims to bring in new productions to be developed under the Route One banner.

He joins from his own prodco, Blackbees Television, where he was executive producer on Netflix series One Day at a Time, which has recently been renewed for a second season. He also executive produced Devious Maids, which ran for four seasons on Lifetime.

Prior to that he was chief creative officer at Televisa USA, where he started its US television studio. He also oversaw the company’s joint venture with Lionsgate TV to develop and produce shows for the US Hispanic market.

Garcia spent seven years as a development and creative executive at HBO before joining Televisa. He was director of drama series at the premium US cablenet, overseeing shows such as The Sopranos and Six Feet Under. He was later promoted to VP of HBO Entertainment.

Garcia said: “Route One is an exciting and dynamic film finance and production company, working with an impressive roster of A-list talent on the films they produce.

“In this time of high-end, premium television programming, these are exactly the types of writers and filmmakers we will be working with on series, as we extend the Route One brand into TV.”

Levine added: “We are incredibly happy to have Michael join our team as our television productions pick up speed. His impressive experience and amazing track record for hit product makes him a huge asset to our company and we are excited to accelerate even further into the television space with him leading the way.”
