Rakuten Viki appoints SPT exec

Streaming service Rakuten Viki has hired Sony Pictures Television (SPT) Networks’ senior VP of digital media and games to oversee its global partnerships.

Mark Jocson has joined the firm in the newly created position of senior VP of strategic initiatives and business development. He will report to CEO Joanne Waage.

Jocson’s responsibilities will include Created by Viki, the company’s shortform content arm, and Soompi, a global news and community site dedicated to Korean pop culture.

The exec previously managed SPT’s digital media business for nearly 100 TV channels around the world and its mobile games publishing studio, with titles including Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune.

He joined Sony in 2009 having previously served as director of digital media for Disney Channels Worldwide.

“His ability to execute and lead streaming and gaming businesses will be key to our global growth through strategic partnerships, distribution and new business lines,” said Waage.

Rakuten Viki claims to be the world’s leading platform for Asian entertainment and culture. Its licensed and original programming is translated into over 200 languages by a community of fans. The firm is backed by Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten.
