Princesses Wear Pants heads to TV

TV deal for Princesses Wear Pants

Atomic Cartoons in Canada has optioned the rights to a children’s book series to produce an animated TV show that will be exec produced by movie star Drew Barrymore.

Princesses Wear Pants comes from Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of NBC News morning show Today, and author Allison Oppenheim. It was recently followed by the second book in the series, Princesses Save the World.

The TV series will be created and exec produced by Guthrie and Oppenheim, with Barrymore and Flower Films also exec producing. Thunderbird Entertainment CEO Jennifer McCarron and Matthew Berkowitz will be exec producers on behalf of Atomic Cartoons.

The series will follow the wide-ranging adventures of the courageous go-getter Princess Penelope Pineapple and her friends, encouraging children to be brave, ambitious and unafraid to make a difference in the world, the producers said.

“One of the things that I’m hoping we can exemplify is that women working together can accomplish great things. I love the idea of girls helping girls, girls cooperating and not competing,” Guthrie said on Today yesterday while discussing the series with Barrymore.

“As a mother, I am proud that Atomic has the opportunity to produce this series to further share Penelope’s empowering message – that you can be pink and sparkly, but also a strong leader who gets things done,” said McCarron, CEO of both Atomic and Thunderbird.
