Poehler troupe links with ES Boomdog

The Mexican production unit set up by Endemol Shine North America and local prodco Boomdog has forged a partnership with a comedy troupe co-founded by Amy Poehler to create new programming.

Endemol Shine Boomdog (ESB) is working with Upright Citizens Brigade (UCB) to create content and develop Spanish comedy talent both in front of and behind the camera.

The two companies will jointly launch what they are calling the first-ever Spanish language “comedy boot camp” to cultivate both writers and performers to participate in an untitled sketch comedy show.

UCB will provide existing bilingual talent to serve as instructors for the boot camp, while ESB will recruit up-and-coming talent to the programme, which will be housed at its studios in Mexico City.

Alejandro Rincon, CEO at ESB, said: “We are looking to identify and help launch the careers of the next wave of Spanish comedy talent in both Mexico and the US and we couldn’t imagine having a better partner to do so.”

Matt Besser, UCB co-founder, added that there was “an untapped group of comedians who we look forward to growing and working with in Mexico City.”

UCB was founded by Parks & Recreation star Poehler alongside Besser, Ian Roberts and Matt Walsh. It runs theatres in New York and LA, offering improv and sketch comedy, and also operates training centres.

ESB was formed in 2017 when Endemol Shine North America merged its Spanish-language division, Endemol Shine Latino, with Mexico City-based prodco Boomdog.

The combined prodco, which has offices and production facilities in Mexico City, LA and Miami, is focused on developing and producing scripted and unscripted content for the US Hispanic and Mexican TV markets. Its output includes MasterChef Mexico for TV Azteca, Mira Quién Baila for Univision and Chumel con Chumel Torres for HBO.

Late last year, the company appointed Jose Lascurain Farell as its VP of production, having earlier named Leonardo Zimbron as head of scripted programming.
