PMC picks Caruso for content push

Population Media Center (PMC), the producer of Hulu drama East Los High, has launched a division to develop, finance and produce original shows, led by the founder of US prodco Virago Entertainment.

Lisa Caruso

Lisa Caruso will head up PMC’s content arm with a remit to ramp up production of formats and dramas on traditional network, cable, streaming and digital platforms.

She will oversee all domestic content development and production for PMC, which aims to create shows that address social issues in the areas of women’s empowerment, human rights and environmental sustainability.

The first project under Caruso’s stewardship is Harlem Code, a one-hour scripted drama series tackling the realities of inner-city urban youth life that will be overseen by Chip Flaherty and Mary Beth O’Connor.

The duo have formed Xavier Holdings, which will act as advisor on the show, with the project using PMC-commissioned research by Columbia University and insights from community partnerships to tell authentic and compelling stories that revolve around current issues affecting young people in Harlem.

Bill Ryerson, president of PMC, said Caruso’s “expertise in developing shows and dedication to meaningful content will expand our success in the US market for years to come.”

Aside from Virago Entertainment, Caruso has worked at Universal Studios and produced reality series and documentary specials for networks including HBO, Bravo, MTV, and E!.

Teen drama East Los High ran for four seasons on Hulu before ending with an 80-minute finale last year.
