Plaza movie Hope springs from Netflix

Netflix is set to air a new film directed by New Zealand duo Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami and starring Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation).

Hope will be written by Karen McCullah and Kirsten ‘Kiwi’ Smith, the team behind Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You and the forthcoming Spice Girls animated feature.

While Netflix has kept the plot under wraps, it is believed the film is a rom-com about the lengths a woman in her mid-30s will go to when she finds a potential partner.

Van Beek and Sami co-wrote, directed and starred in The Breaker Upperers, which also premiered on Netflix earlier this year.

Plaza recently wrapped production on the feature Black Bear, a suspenseful meta-drama that she produced and starred in.

Hope will be produced but Michael Costigan and Jason Bateman for Aggregate Films, by Lundi Shackleton and Philippe Palacios for Les Espoirs Pictures and by Plaza.

The film’s executive producers are Adam Wagner, Smith and McCullah.
