Phoebe Waller-Bridge signs Amazon deal

Phoebe Waller-Bridge in Fleabag

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the creator of multi-Emmy-winning UK comedy Fleabag, has signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios.

The writer, actor and comedian will now exclusively create television content for Amazon Studios to premiere globally on its Amazon Prime Video streaming service.

Fleabag, the series created, written by and starring Waller-Bridge, won six Emmy Awards on Monday evening, including Outstanding Comedy, Lead Actress and Writing for a Comedy Series.

Based on Waller-Bridge’s one-woman stage show of the same name, the series started out on BBC3 in the UK before moving to BBC2 and later BBC1. It has also aired globally on Amazon Prime Video, while Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said at last week’s RTS conference in Cambridge that the show was one he wished his platform had acquired.

Waller-Bridge said: “I’m insanely excited to be continuing my relationship with Amazon. Working with the team on Fleabag was the creative partnership dreams are made of. It really feels like home. I can’t wait to get going.”

Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios, added: “We are thrilled to be continuing our partnership with Phoebe at Amazon Studios. As evident in her great success at the Emmy Awards this week, she is clever, brilliant, generous and a virtuoso on multiple fronts including writing, acting and producing.”

Waller-Bridge has also garnered acclaim as the writer and showrunner of the first season of the BBC America drama Killing Eve, which stars Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer.

The series earned Waller-Bridge a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama Series, as well as an Emmy nod for Outstanding Writing of a Drama Series. The writer stepped back into an exec producer role for Killing Eve’s second season, with Emerald Fennell taking over as lead writer.

Waller-Bridge’s additional TV credits include Crashing, which was her screenwriting debut, and Broadchurch. She will also executive produce Entertainment One romantic comedy thriller Run for HBO, starring Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson.

In feature films, Waller-Bridge played the Star Wars franchise’s first female droid in Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. She also recently joined the writing team for the 25th James Bond film, No Time to Die, starring Daniel Craig and directed by Cary Fukunaga. The film is dated for an April 2020 release.
