Peacock picks up Fresh Prince reboot

Will Smith

NBCUniversal-owned streaming service Peacock has ordered a two-season reboot of NBC’s 1990s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

The announcement was made by the show’s star Will Smith on YouTube on Tuesday.

The reboot, titled Bel-Air, is based on a viral video by Morgan Cooper of a trailer for a reimagined dramatic version of the original series. It will take the form of a serialised one-hour drama set in the modern day.

Bel-Air will be produced by Smith’s prodco Westbrook Studios and Universal Television, which was behind the original show.

Cooper will direct the series, which he will co-write with Chris Collins, who is also acting as showrunner.

The pair will exec produce with Smith via Westbrook Studios along with Quincy Jones, Benny Medina and original series creators Andy and Susan Borowitz. Miguel Melendez and Westbrook Studios’ TV head Terence Carter will also exec produce.

The news comes shortly after WarnerMedia-owned HBO Max announced plans to air an unscripted The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air reunion special. The streamer is also the current home of the original series.
