Paramount rides with The Last Cowboy

The Last Cowboy focuses on the world of professional ‘reining’

US cablenet Paramount Network has ordered an original unscripted series from the co-creator of its hit Kevin Costner drama Yellowstone.

The Last Cowboy comes from Taylor Sheridan, whose credits also include writing Hell or High Water and Sicario.

The series, produced by Truly Original and 101 Studios, chronicles the lives of eight men and women who compete in the world of professional ‘reining’ – a competition where riders guide horses through a precise pattern of circles, spins and stops.

Sheridan, who devised Yellowstone together with John Linson, is also in the midst of making another season of that show after Paramount ordered a third run, ahead of a season two premiere that yesterday topped US cable ratings.

In conjunction with The Last Cowboy, the writer-director will launch a reining competition in Las Vegas with a US$1m purse, which will be featured in the series finale.

“Viewers came in massive numbers to watch Yellowstone,” said Paramount Network president of development Keith Cox. “Now we’re serving up fans an inside look at the lives of real horsemen and their challenges and triumphs within the world of competitive horse reining.”

The exec producers for Truly Original (Deal or No Deal, Ink Master, The Real Housewives of Atlanta) are Glenda Hersh and Steven Weinstock, alongside Sheridan and David C Glasser for Yellowstone producer 101 Studios.
