Oz VoD service takes ‘best of British’

Forthcoming Australian video-on-demand service Stan has signed a deal with BBC Worldwide (BBCWW) to offer subscribers Sherlock, Ripper Street, Top Gear and Doctor Who.

The popular series will be available when the platform, which is co-owned by broadcasters Nine Entertainment and Fairfax Media and will cost around A$10 (US$8.70) a month, launches next year.

The multi-year SVoD agreement also includes rights to Orphan Black, The Office, Gavin & Stacey, The Vicar of Dibley, Extras, Absolutely Fabulous, Fawlty Towers, Luther, Wallander, Parade’s End and Torchwood, as well as factual and children’s titles.

“Australians have long been entertained by BBCWW’s great slate of programming. Their shows are especially loved by Australians, with British drama and comedy particularly relevant to our audience,” said Nick Forward, Stan’s director of content and product.

Nine and Fairfax have previously struck licensing deals with US studios MGM and Sony Pictures Television (SPT), as well as Aussie pubcaster SBS, for various European dramas and local productions.

Following its deal with SPT, Stan will hold exclusive Australian rights to Breaking Bad prequel Better Call Saul, which is due to begin airing on AMC in the US next year.

This comes as US SVoD platform Netflix prepares to launch in Australia and New Zealand in March, where it will host its own original series such as Bloodline, Marvel’s Daredevil, Sense8 and Grace & Frankie.
