Ofcom approves iPlayer changes

BBC iPlayer

UK media regulator Ofcom has approved pubcaster the BBC’s move to extend the availability of new shows on its iPlayer VoD platform to 12 months, with some titles to be available for longer.

Ofcom undertook a BBC competition assessment to consider the plans, as required by the BBC Charter and Agreement. New shows were previously limited to a one-month window on the service.

It has now confirmed that the BBC can go ahead with the planned changes to iPlayer, subject to certain conditions and guidance, as the proposed changes “could deliver significant public value over time.”

“They could increase choice and availability of public-service broadcast content and help ensure the BBC remains relevant in the face of changing viewing habits,” Ofcom said.

However, the regulator remains concerned about the competitive challenges created, particularly for other public service broadcasters’ VoD services.

“While we have concluded that the public value justifies the adverse impact on fair and effective competition we have identified, and the BBC can proceed with its plans, this is subject to certain conditions and guidance.

“Our conditions will help ensure that the new BBC iPlayer delivers future public value, and will mitigate risks to fair and effective competition.”
