Noah Media scores Charlton doc

UK indie Noah Media Group (NMG), creator of feature doc Bobby Robson: More Than a Manager, is developing a documentary about legendary football player and manager Jack Charlton.

The producer has partnered with Charlton and his family on the project, which will feature rarely seen archive footage and tell the story of Charlton’s time with the Republic of Ireland team during Italia 90, when he managed them in their first Fifa World Cup.

Charlton helped win the World Cup as an England player in 1966, alongside his brother Bobby, and made 629 appearances for Leeds United between 1952 and 1973.

A Freeman of Dublin and Honorary Citizen of Ireland, he became a household name as pundit and TV celebrity in the early 1970s before turning his hand to coaching.

Now in production on location in Ireland and England, the doc will feature star players and key characters from Charlton’s career, as well as new interviews with the man himself and, for the first time, his family, alongside contributions from major figures in Irish music, film and politics.

The doc will be directed by Gabriel Clarke (Bobby Robson: More Than A Manager, Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans) and Pete Thomas (Euro 2016: Sounds of the Summer) with former Ireland captain Andy Townsend joining as an executive producer.

It will be produced by John McKenna and Torquil Jones (Bobby Robson: More than a Manager, Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans) and is due to be released by NMG’s distribution arm, NoahX, in 2020.

“I remember Jack Charlton being as surprised as anyone when he got the Ireland manager’s job in 1986. What followed changed lives, altered careers and transformed a nation and it is a privilege to team up with the Charlton family and so many of those who made it possible to get to the heart of this funny, emotional and inspiring story,” said Clarke.

John Charlton said: “We are delighted to be working with Noah Media Group on what will be the definitive film on my father’s life. It will be fascinating to see how the film links his life as a husband, father and brother to his incredible achievements in football, as both a player and a manager.”
