Nippon TV takes Weakest Beast to MipTV

Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV is to bring new scripted format Weakest Beast to MipTV this April, aiming to emulate the success of its predecessors Mother and Woman – My Life for My Children.

Nippon TV’s Weakest Beast

The one-hour romantic drama series follows two lovelorn millennials unable to express their feelings. It centres on a young woman who yearns for a relationship where she can be true to herself and an accountant who hides his untrusting nature behind the façade of a street-smart ladies’ man.

It is produced by Nippon TV and written by Kiko Nogi. Kyoko Matsumoto produces and Nobuo Mizuta directs.

Nippon has already seen international interest for its dramas, having previously sold the format rights to Mother to Ukrainian channel STB and both Mother and Woman – My Life for My Children to Turkish firms MF Yapim and Medyapim for adaptation.

Additionally, Weakest Beast is being offered as a finished drama, with 10 episodes available with English, Mandarin Chinese, Bahasa Indonesian or Thai subtitles.

Atsushi Sogo, president of international business development for Nippon TV, said the drama had already attracted “enthusiastic remake offers” and was confident production companies around the world would be interested in the format.

“We are always targeting millennials when we create new drama series and this title was accepted very highly by our targeted viewers,” he added. “They related deeply to the characters’ thoughts and actions as they try their best to make their way through a complicated time in their lives.”
