Nippon builds on Hulu Japan

Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV has formed a new digital division following it acquisition of Hulu’s operations in the country earlier this year.

Nippon’s Cyber Business Strategy arm will be headed by Hulu Japan chairman Hiroyuki Oho and will use second-screen technology and data to develop and produce original programming for the subscription VoD service.

Oho, who will oversee the new unit with acting divisional president Shinsuke Wakai, is also looking at venture investments and merger and acquisition activity to expand Nippon’s digital interests.

“We also plan to bring together companies and students to create a laboratory that becomes a centre for business development while strengthening our focus on monetisation and further supporting our ad sales division,” Oho said.

The Cyber unit, which is being launched as part of Nippon’s expansion plans released around its 60th anniversary, intends to make digital services a “significant source of income.”

It follows the firm’s acquisition of Hulu Japan in February, which marked Nippon’s entry into the SVoD business.

Nippon is also seeking to create original programming on Hulu that is linked to terrestrial broadcasts while expanding its JoinTV service, which the firm claims is the world’s first TV show-linked social interactive viewing service.
