BBC/AMC miniseries The Night Manager

The producers behind BBC1 and AMC drama The Night Manager are set to adapt another John le Carré spy novel for the small screen.

London- and LA-based prodco The Ink Factory has teamed with Paramount Television to put The Spy Who Came in From the Cold into development, with Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire) attached to pen the project.

Kudos co-founder Stephen Garrett’s new drama indie Character 7 will assist with financing and production.

Both the Ink Factory and Garrett were behind the adaptation of le Carré’s The Night Manager, which starred Tom Hiddleston as a former British soldier who uncovers secrets about the UK political class and an arms trade. The drama was last week nominated for 12 Primetime Emmy Awards.

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, written in 1963, was turned into an Oscar-winning film starring Richard Burton in 1965.

The story follows a British intelligence operative who seeks revenge on the East German intelligence service deputy director responsible for the death of one of his agents.

The TV version will be exec produced by the Ink Factory’s Stephen and Simon Cornwell, along with Character 7’s Garrett.

Paramount Worldwide Television Licensing and Distribution will handle distribution of the series outside of the UK.

A broadcaster is not yet attached.
