YouTube, Pilgrim prep Pearlman doc

YouTube has ordered a documentary from US prodco Pilgrim Media Group about notorious Backstreet Boys and NSYNC producer Lou Pearlman.

Lance Bass

The Lou Pearlman Project (working title) has been commissioned for the video site’s premium subscription service, YouTube Red.

It tells the story of the man who, besides managing some of the most popular boy bands in the 1990s and 2000s and creating a multibillion dollar empire in the process, was the orchestrator of one of the largest and longest-running Ponzi schemes in history.

Produced by Lionsgate-owned Pilgrim Media Group, the documentary will feature in-depth interviews with members of pop groups the Backstreet Boys, O-Town and NSYNC who worked closely with Pearlman, including AJ McLean, JC Chasez and Lance Bass.

Craig Piligian, Pilgrim’s CEO, plus Nicholas Caprio and Sam Korkis will exec produce the show alongside Bass.

“I’ve always wanted to tell the story of the rise and fall of Lou Pearlman; I thought I knew most of the story since I had a front-row seat,” said Bass. “I was fascinated to learn so much more through the eyes of other artists that were also subjected to Pearlman and his nefarious operation.”

The order follows on swiftly from the announcement of YouTube Red’s commission of action-comedy series Wayne from Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
