Woodcut, UKTV, TCB prep murder doc

The Killer in My Family

Multichannel operator UKTV is teaming up with UK indie Woodcut Media for a true-crime series exploring the effect of having a murderer in the family.

Rather than investigating how a murder can impact a victim’s relatives, The Killer in My Family (6×45’) tells the story from the perspective of the murderer’s family, raising questions such as whether there had been any early signs of the killer’s intentions and how they felt after discovering what had happened.

The series will feature interviews with family members and ex-partners of infamous murderers including Ian Huntley, Fred West, Richard Ramirez, Levi Bellfield and those involved in the honour killing of Surjit Athwal.

Woodcut Media will produce, while UKTV has pre-invested in the series and will premiere it on its Really network in January 2019. Factual specialist distributor TCB Media Rights has deficit-financed the show and will distribute internationally under the amended title My Deadly Relation.

The deal was brokered by UKTV’s acquisitions manager Daniel Thomas. Kate Beal and Matthew Gordon exec produce for Woodcut Media alongside Paul Heaney, CEO of TCB Media Rights and Thomas.

“Buyers are constantly asking for a new way in to telling true crime stories,” commented Heaney. “The Killer in My Family takes a fresh view point which will offer viewers well known crimes with a new twist.”
