Windlight Pictures’ Night in Paradise marks first German original for StarzPlay

International streamer StarzPlay has commissioned its first German-language original with a project based on a graphic novel.

Moritz Polter

Night in Paradise (6×45′) is based on the graphic novel of the same name by Frank Schmolke and is the first commission for Windlight Pictures, part of ITV Studios.

Set to star Jürgen Vogel and Lea Drinda, it is a coproduction with Heinrich Ambrosch’s Satel Film in Austria and has been written by Hannah Schopf (Tiger Girl) and Matthias Glasner (Das Boot), who will also direct.

The drama follows a father, a taxi-driver, and his estranged, 18-year-old daughter who collide while drifting through Munich, reopening old wounds as all around them capitalism crumbles.

Windlight Pictures was founded last year by Das Boot executive producer Moritz Polter.

StarzPlay’s originals slate includes: French series A French Case, All Those Things We Never Said; Spanish titles Express, Nacho Vidal, An Industry XXXL and X-Rey; and Latin American titles El Refugio, MalaYerba, Señorita 89 and Toda La Sangre.

Superna Kalle, president at Starz International, said: “Germany was one of the first European territories we launched in as a service and is such an important market for us – we’re delighted to now be commissioning our first ever German original series.

“Night in Paradise is a dark, edgy, unique project we know will resonate with our audiences, and we have fantastic local partners in Windlight Pictures and Satel Film.”
