Weinstein Co acquires Peaky Blinders

The Weinstein Company has acquired US distribution rights to hit British gangster drama Peaky Blinders as the indie movie studio continues to push into the television business.

The deal includes TV and subscription VoD distribution rights for seasons 1-3 – though the BBC has so far officially only green-lit two – with an option to acquire further seasons.

It comes after The Weinstein Co last month came aboard Lookout Point/BBC Worldwide six-part epic War & Peace as a coproduction partner.

Peaky Blinders premiered on BBC2 in the UK in September and has achieved an average all audience consolidated viewing figure of around 2.4 million across the series, according to The Weinstein Co.

BBC2 recently commissioned a second six-part season of the show, which will commence production in January 2014.

Peaky Blinders is the first television drama from Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises, Locke) and is produced by Caryn Mandabach Productions and Endemol-owned Tiger Aspect Productions.

In 2012, Endemol Worldwide Distribution secured international sales rights to the series, which begins in the lawless slum neighborhoods of 1919 Birmingham where returning soldiers, revolutionaries and criminal gangs fight for survival.

The Weinstein Co has signalled its ambitions to become more active in the TV business and earlier this year inked a deal with Netflix for exclusive US pay rights to the independent film studio’s first-run movies, beginning in 2016.
