Wax ‘to exit YouTube for Amazon’

YouTube’s boss of original drama series and movies, Jon Wax, is in talks to take over the vacant position of head of genre at Amazon Studios, according to US reports.

News emerged last year that YouTube was reining in its activities in original scripted content for its premium subscription service to refocus on ad-supported video, leaving question marks over the future of Wax’s role.

Wax, who joined the Google-owned platform from US cablenet WGN to lead scripted originals in 2017, is now reportedly in talks to take over from Sharon Tal Yguado, who decided to exit Amazon Studios last month.

Yguado oversaw all genre scripted development at Amazon, with a remit covering science fiction, fantasy and supernatural-themed series.

This includes Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series, which has been in the works since it acquired global TV rights to JRR Tolkien’s epic fantasy for a reported US$250m in 2017.

During his time at YouTube, Wax has worked on series such as Cobra Kai, Origin and Impulse.
