Walter Presents first Russian series

The Sect is distributed by Videoplugger

UK-based Global Series Network (GSN) has acquired drama series The Sect (Cekta) for Walter Presents, marking the first Russian show to be carried by the non-English-language VoD platform.

The Sect will air on Walter Presents, which GSN co-owns with UK broadcaster Channel 4, in the UK and Ireland following a deal between GSN, distributor Videoplugger and prodco Les Films de la Strada.

Walter Iuzzolino

The hit eight-part series is directed by French director Gela Babluani, who previously made Money and 13 Tzameti. It stars Evgeny Koriakovsky and Svetlana Khodchenkova.

The show follows a psychotherapist and a nurse who run a covert deprogramming operation, specialising in controversial methods of liberating members from dangerous sects.

“I’ve been looking for a glossy, gripping, contemporary Russian series for some time, and this one has definitely been worth the wait,” said Walter Iuzzolino, co-founder and curator of Walter Presents.

“The Sect is a beautiful, haunting psychological thriller with an original story and a bold cinematic approach. Unflinchingly honest, at times brutal with a distinct uncompromising Russian flavour, this is an exciting first foray for Walter Presents into a previously untapped region.”

Emanuele Galloni, CEO of Videoplugger, said the deal was “recognition of our hard work cherry-picking great drama for international representation and distribution from all over the world.”
