ViX+ greenlights drama, docuseries under strategic alliance with Mediapro Studio

US Hispanic SVoD service ViX+ has struck a strategic alliance with Spain’s The Mediapro Studio as the TelevisaUnivision-owned platform continues to expand its content pipeline ahead of its launch later this year.

The companies unveiled two new projects that have been commissioned through the partnership, starting with scripted drama series Las Pelotaris.

Set in the 1920s, Las Pelotaris follows three pioneering women who broke barriers to succeed. Created by Marc Cistaré (Locked Up, The Boat) and directed by Jesús Rodrigo (Locked Up, The Boarding School), the series will be shot on location in Spain and Mexico. The screenplay is by Adriana Rivas, Javier Naya and Anaí López.

The second show is docuseries La sangre y la gloria, which investigates well-known Mexican sports figures and their relationships with the world of crime, either as victims or direct involvement. The project was created by writer and sports journalist Juan Villoro.

ViX+ is set to launch in the second half of 2022 and will offer around 10,000 hours of content and more than 50 original shows and movies. The platform’s AVoD tier, ViX, launched earlier this year.

Rodrigo Mazón, executive VP and general manager of ViX+, called the partnership a “crucial step to continue building the service” for its audiences in the US and Latin America.

Marta Ezpeleta, head of international distribution at The Mediapro Studio, added that the deal is an important one for the Spanish company as it looks to expand into the US and Latin America, where it already has its own production facilities and a team of creators.

TelevisaUnivision has already agreed numerous original content pacts for ViX+ programming, including first-look deals with Propagate Fuego, Mexican actor Eugenio Derbez’s 3Pas Studios and Mexican-American star Salma Hayek Pinault’s Ventanarosa Productions.
