ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) has announced the production of a new drama series about the life of Spanish fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga.

Currently in development, the series will be filmed in 2021 with executive production by Frida Torresblanco (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Murder of Richard Nixon, Dancing Steps, Disobedience) through her company Braven Film.

The biopic has James Kent attached as director (Testament of Youth, MotherFatherSon, The Aftermath) and with Rebecca Pollock and Kas Graham as scriptwriters.

Balenciaga was known to be very secretive and elusive and only gave two interviews to the media during his 50-year career. The designer led a revolution in fashion and his ability for precision and perfectionism earned him the admiration of famous contemporaries and fellow professionals such as Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy and Coco Chanel.

Kent said: “There are few artists who have influenced the material reality of our world (in relation to texture, colour and silhouette) in the way that Balenciaga has. His creations changed the way of understanding fashion and his story, until now, had only been told through his designs.”
