VIS, Morena link up for Lozano dramedy

ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) and Spanish production company Morena Films have agreed a co-development deal for a dramedy series entitled The Kellys.

Héctor Lozano, creator of teen hits Merlí on TV3/Netflix and Merlí: Sapere Aude on Movistar+, is the creator and showrunner of The Kellys, which follows a group of European and Latin American cleaners who all work in a Spanish hotel.

Lozano said: “Those who clean, those who collect, those who order in hotels… they are the Kellys. Women who live against the clock from the moment they get up until they go to bed. The Kellys are there, you have never stopped to look at them, but their work is essential.”

He said he hoped the show would make viewers “smile, cry and also dance.”

“The Kellys is set to be a high-quality production with a great international potential and Morena Films is the perfect partner for the project,” added Laura Abril, senior VP of VIS for EMEA and Asia. The show will be distributed by VIS.

Abril said the show is “about strong women and touches on universal themes such as personal and labour dignity, and love amidst hardship. This production perfectly fits with our studio mission to tell compelling stories and creating the best content that can be watched via multiple platforms.”
