VIS finds Something Special in Korea

Viacom International Studios (VIS) has agreed a first-look representation and development deal with Korean format prodco Something Special.

The deal gives VIS, part of ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI), first refusal on up to 10 of Something Special’s formats, which span genres including music, food and gameshows. The outfit also produces global formats like Korea’s Got Talent, The Voice Korea and 1 vs 100 Korea.

The move is part of a wider initiative by VCNI to expand its presence in Asian territories, which already includes the channels Nickelodeon, MTV and Paramount Network.

Last year, Something Special reached similar deals with Montreal-based distributor Media Ranch for two of its health formats. In October, it also partnered with UK prodco ITV Studios to develop formats for the global market.

“Korea is a key market for us as we continue to grow our studios ambition in Asia. This paves the way for our streaming ambitions in the region and internationally, as the IPs will be available to our OTT platforms and global networks,” said Pierre Cheung, senior VP and general manager for Asia at VCNI.
