Viaplay, Zentropa team up for drama series on Danish author Karen Blixen

Connie Nielsen stars in The Dreamer – Becoming Karen Blixen

Nordic Entertainment Group-owned streamer Viaplay and Danish prodco Zentropa Entertainments are partnering on drama series The Dreamer – Becoming Karen Blixen, a Viaplay original about one of Denmark’s most acclaimed authors.

Created by Dunja Gry Jensen (Norskov) and directed by Jeanette Nordahl (Wildland), the six-part project will star Connie Nielsen (Gladiator) in the lead role. It is based on a concept by Nielsen and Karoline Leth, and follows Blixen’s journey from her lowest point to become a renowned writer.

Filming took place in Denmark and internationally, with filming recently wrapping. The show, which is primarily in Danish, is set to premiere exclusively on Viaplay in 2022, alongside around 60 other Viaplay originals.

Stockholm-headquartered Viaplay is currently available in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. It is set to launch in the US in 2021 and in the Netherlands and UK in 2022, followed by Canada, Germany, Austria and Switzerland by the end of 2023.

The Dreamer – Becoming Karen Blixen is produced Zentropa Entertainments by Marie Cecilie Gade, Karoline Leth and Charlotte Hjordt and coproduction with Belga.

Elsewhere, Viaplay and Zentropa Entertainments are partnering on The Kingdom Exodus, the third and final season of Lars von Trier’s The Kingdom, produced by Zentropa for Viaplay and DR.

The streaming service is also set to produce Hilma, a biopic of the Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af Klint, written and directed by Lasse Hallström.
