USA preps first comedies

UPFRONTS: US cablenet USA Network has greenlit its first original half-hour comedies, including a remake of a UK series to sit alongside its acquisiton of ABC’s Modern Family.

Sirens follows the fraught lives of three male emergency medical technicians, who balance their self-destructive personalities with their careers as ambulance drivers.

The series is produced by Apostle and Fox Television Studios, alongisde Daybreak Pictures, and is based on a series that aired on Channel 4 in the UK in 2011.

Playing House, meanwhile, is a single-camera buddy comedy about two friends who reunite after time apart. The series is from Universal Cable Productions and American Work.

Both series will air in the first quarter of 2014, after the debut of Modern Family on the network this fall.

USA has also picked up a comedy pilot, Love Is Dead, a single-camera show that revolves around a company that specialises in breaking up couples.

It will be produced by Universal Cable Productions and Gaumont International Television and is based on the French short film of the same name.

On its drama slate, USA has commissioned The Edge, a thriller from Universal Cable Productions and exec producer John Legend’s Get Lifted Film; Complications, which tells the story of an ER doctor whose life changes after he is involved in a gang shooting, from Fox TV Studios; and legal thriller Shadow Counsel, also from Universal Cable Productions.

Other commissions include Bank, a crime series about a young FBI agent from Universal Cable Productions; Blanco County, which follows a worldly pro baseball player who returns to his small Texas hometown; and Hungry, which tells the tale of the son of a famous chef who tries to open his own restaurant, produced by Universal Cable Productions.

The Arrangement, a one-hour drama pilot from Numb3rs creators Cheryl Heuton and Nicolas Falacci, is up for consideration at the channel.

The story follows a Colombian woman who trades her tragic past for a fresh start in Miami by marrying a politician.

These series join USA’s first period drama, Horizon, which goes into production this summer, and Graceland, from White Collar creator Jeff Eastin, on the network’s drama slate.
