Upgrade and Shochiku partner on Japanese drama series A True Novel

Upgrade Productions, the new Los Angeles-based production company that develops and produces premium local language productions for a global audience, is partnering with Japanese producer Shochiku on new series A True Novel.

Matt Brodlie

The project was unveiled by Upgrade co-presidents Matt Brodlie and Jonathan Kier. The eight-part Japanese-language series is produced by Shochiku, creator of long-running feature film series Tora-san.

A True Novel is written by Japanese writer Riko Sakaguchi, whose credits include Academy-Award nominated The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, Mary and the Witches Flower and After the Rain. The new series is executive produced by Upgrade Productions.

Based on the best-selling Japanese novel from Minae Mizumura, A True Novel is inspired by Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights.

Jonathan Kier

The series will be produced by Shuhei Akita from Shochiku; and Brodlie and Kier from Upgrade.

In partnership with Germany’s Constantin Film, Upgrade is capitalising on the booming demand for local language content.

Its development slate also includes TV series Twenty Faces, based on the book series written by Japanese mystery writer Edogawa Ranpo, co-produced with Japanese production and distribution company The Klockworx and produced with Akiko Funatsu.
