Universal Studio Group adds two development execs to LA team

LA-based Universal Studio Group (USG) has made a pair of high-profile appointments to the development teams at Universal Content Productions (UCP) and Universal Television.

Marc Velez has been named senior VP and head of development for UCP, reporting directly to Jennifer Gwartz, exec VP at UCP.

Velez was formerly president of New York-based Lee Daniels Entertainment, where he developed and executive produced The Wonder Years (ABC), Our Kind of People (Fox) and The Ms Pat Show (BET). Before that he was senior VP at Imagine Television, where he developed shows such as Empire for Fox and worked on Netflix’s Arrested Development.

Former Netflix exec Naketha Mattocks joins Universal Television as senior VP of drama development, reporting to Vivian Cannon, executive VP of drama development, Universal Television.

Mattocks previously worked in Netflix’s family film division, which she launched in 2018. The division produced 18 films, including Nzingha Stewart’s feature directorial debut Tall Girl and Addison Rae’s feature debut He’s All That, in addition to the Jon Chu-produced limited series Thai Cave Rescue.

In prior roles, Mattocks was the VP of original movies at Disney Channels Worldwide and the head of development for writer/director Gary Ross’s Larger Than Life Productions.

USG is the umbrella brand for Universal Television, UCP, Universal International Studios and Universal Television Alternative Studio. Universal Television is led by president Erin Underhill while UCP is led by president Beatrice Springborn.
