Turner names EMEA content chief

Turner Broadcasting System Europe has handed the head of its Spanish arm additional duties as entertainment content chief across EMEA.

Domingo Corral, currently Turner Spain’s senior VP and general manager, has also become entertainment content chief for EMEA and will head up general entertainment across the region.

Corral’s appointment is part of Turner’s drive to up its general entertainment output, which has included channels launches of generalist channel TNT, classic movie net TCM, Nordic film channel Silver and lifestyle channel Glitz* and content such as Steven Spielberg drama Falling Skies.

The role is akin to Michael Carrington’s London-based role as chief content officer for children, a Turner spokeswoman confirmed to C21. Carrington commissions kids’ content out of Turner’s London production hub that runs on local channel feeds in the region.

Turner EMEA is now set to launch a similar push in older-skewed content. Working out of Madrid, Corral will work closely with counterparts in Latin America, Asia Pacific and the US to develop and produce original content for Turner’s entertainment channels.

“Ongoing expansion and consolidation through investment in original series will be key to our entertainment strategy,” he said.

“Turner has a wide range of programming assets that go far beyond our traditional strengths in EMEA in news and kids,” added Turner EMEA president Jeff Kupsky.

“Domingo’s role will be to develop and harness these assets around our region, drawing upon our existing structure and expertise to give them a much sharper, more strategic focus.”

The news comes after C21 revealed in July early stage plans to give Turner Classic Movies’ UK feed a shot in the arm by finding more general entertainment and series with co-viewing potential.

TNT’s series Falling Skies launched in 75 countries last year – an exercise Turner Entertainment Networks president Steve Koonin called “a global television event.”
