Mipcom 2021 is underway in Cannes this week – the first time the physical event has taken place since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic – and the C21 team is on the ground there covering industry developments and canvassing opinions.

With Nordic Entertainment Group-owned streamer Viaplay in the midst of an original production spree, chief content officer Filippa Wallestam spoke to Nico Franks about what the company is looking for and how its ambitious international expansion plans will see it tackle markets such as the US, UK and Canada.

Fremantle International CEO Jens Richter discussed how the production and distribution giant has approached this year’s Mipcom differently to previous editions, its push into high-end factual with a dramatic streak and why it’s important to strike a balance between working with new and established talent.

Hordur Runarsson, CEO, producer and co-founder of Glassriver, talked about how the pandemic positively impacted his Reykjavik-based prodco’s latest drama, Black Sands, which is being distributed by All3Media International, and how Iceland’s progressive politics have shaped the country’s production sector as streaming continues to present plenty of opportunities for original programming.

C21FM is live 24/7, with a block of interviews starting at 10am BST every day HERE.
