Totally Spies makes German breakthrough

France’s Marathon has finalised the final piece in its Totally Spies jigsaw, selling the female-fronted spy toon to Germany’s Super RTL.

Totally Spies (left) will air on the German network from July 2006. In something of a coup for the network, the latest deal brings Totally Spies to one of the biggest markets in Europe, adding to the show’s existing fan base in 100 countries worldwide.

Marathon Media’s president, Vincent Chalvon Dermersay, said: “Germany was one of the few remaining countries that Spies had yet to conquer. The daily broadcasting on Super RTL will enable German teens and tweens to thrill to the non-stop action of this stand-out series.”

In the US, where the series airs on Cartoon Network, Totally Spies garners 2.2 million viewers daily, while on French channel TF1, it was the number one programme in January 2006. The series is also a major hit on Teletoon Canada, Jetix Europe, Jetix Latin America, Cartoon Network Japan, Media Set Rete Italy, Channel 4 and GMTV (UK), Disney Asia, Network Ten and Nickelodeon in Australia and Spain’s La Forta.

Marathon said that it was developing a wide-ranging merchandise programme to capitalise on its recent success, including mobile phone games, video games, interactive software, books and a line of apparel.
