Top Hat 9/11 doc travels beyond BBC

Feature documentary Surviving 9/11

Seven Network in Australia and Globo in Brazil are among the international networks to acquire the rights to UK prodco Top Hat’s feature documentary Surviving 9/11, originally made for the BBC.

CBC in Canada, TVNZ in New Zealand, DPG Media in Belgium, RTV in Slovenia, NRK in Norway, Sky Deutschland in Germany, KAN in Israel, AMC Networks channel Odisea in Spain and Odisseia in Portugal, and Rai Documentari in Italy have all bought the show from Israeli distributor Keshet International (KI). Public library-backed US and Canada initiative Hoopla Digital has also obtained library streaming rights.

The doc has previously been sold to Canal+ Group in France, TV2 in Denmark, TV4 in Sweden, RTL in the Netherlands and Discovery in the US after KI picked up distribution rights last September. Deals in other territories are also said to be in the works.

The film looks back at the events in New York and intertwines moments from the day with parts of the aftermath during the last 20 years. Modern day interviews highlight how the memory of 9/11 still affects the US.

Top Hat founder Darren Kemp is executive producer along with BBC commissioning editor Hamish Fergusson, with Cheryl Hockey producing. The film is directed by Arthur Cary, known for BBC holocaust film The Last Survivors.
