TNT Serie in Germany has commissioned a six-part drama about the origins of the country’s hip-hop scene from Dark producer Wiedemann & Berg.

Almost Fly will begin shooting next summer with Florian Gaag (Wholetrain) as scriptwriter and director.

It’s the latest original commission from the WarnerMedia-owned network following dramedy Add a Friend, mystery series Weinberg and multi-award-winning gangster epic 4 Blocks.

The 6×60’ series is set in 1990, with social upheaval sweeping Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall. It focuses on three schoolmates who discover hip-hop music at a nearby US army base.

The executive producers are Quirin Berg, Max Wiedemann and Elena Gruschka, as well as TNT Serie’s Hannes Heyelmann and Anke Greifeneder, who is also head of the editorial board.

Heyelmann, MD of WarnerMedia channels in Germany, said: “We are consistently breaking new ground with our original productions, taking on topics that are inventive and captivate our viewers.

“With Almost Fly, we are exploring a coming-of-age story in a contemporary-historical context, capturing the lifestyle of the early 90s for the first time. We accompany a group of young people who, in times of upheaval, discover a subculture for themselves: German hip-hop.”
