The original limited series, also called The Santa Clause (working title), will star and be executive produced by Allen.

Jack Burditt (30 Rock, Modern Family) will serve as executive producer and showrunner, while Kevin Hench, Richard Baker and Rick Messina are also exec producers.

The Disney Branded Television series, produced by 20th Television, is set to go into production in LA in March.

News of the remake comes nearly three decades after the original movie debuted in cinemas, grossing around US$190m in 1994. The film spawned a pair of sequels, both of which also performed well at the box office, with 2002’s The Santa Clause 2 grossing more than US$170m and 2006’s The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause taking around US$110m.

Allen’s other acting credits include his Golden Globe-winning role in the ABC series Home Improvement and his voice role as Buzz Lightyear in the first three Toy Story movies.

In the reboot, Scott Calvin is on the brink of his 65th birthday and realises that he can’t be Santa forever. With people to please, he sets out to find a suitable replacement while preparing his family for a new adventure in a life south of the North Pole.
