TikTok doc lands global sales after Vertigo Releasing, Goldridge Media deals

Feature documentary TikTok Boom

Broadcasters and streamers from Europe, Australia, Africa and the Middle East have picked up a feature documentary about the cultural impact of TikTok being sold by Vertigo Releasing and Goldridge Media.

TikTok Boom (1×97′) is directed by Sundance Institute Documentary Film fellow Shalini Kantayya (Catching the Sun, Coded Bias) and produced by Ross M Dinerstein, Danni Mynard and Kantayya.

The film has been produced by Campfire Studios in association with Olive Hill Media and Such Content and features social influencers including Spencer X, Feroza Aziz and Deja Foxx talking about how the Chinese-owned platform has shaken up the social media landscape to become the most downloaded app in the world, according to the producers.

Amazon Prime Video has acquired rights to the film in the UK, Ireland, the Nordics and Benelux; Stan and SBS have taken Australian rights; and DBS and Hot have picked up the film for Israel.

Meanwhile, MultiChoice-owned streamer Showmax will have the show in South Africa and Al Jazeera has taken rights in the Middle East/North Africa. The film will have its US broadcast premiere on PBS via the Independent Lens strand later this year.

UK-based Vertigo has picked up international rights to the documentary outside North America and is working alongside Goldridge on distribution worldwide.

“TikTok, Boom is a vital piece of filmmaking, shining a light on the cultural phenomenon that is TikTok, and is a must-see for both young and older audiences,” said Goldridge Media MD Danny Goldman, who will be representing the film at Mipcom in Cannes next month.
