Theodosia explores new territories after licence deals with BBC, OSN, Quebecor

Historical drama series Theodosia

MIPTV: Live-action kids’ series Theodosia has found new homes on platforms in the UK, the Middle East, Canada, the Netherlands, Portugal and Africa, the show’s distributors ZDF Studios and Federation Kids & Family have confirmed on the first day of MipTV.

Produced by Cottonwood Media in coproduction with ZDF, ZDF Studios, HBO Max and Brazil’s Globo, Theodosia (26×26’) was unveiled last Mipcom and has since been acquired by the BBC in the UK, OSN in the Middle East, Quebecor in French Canada, NPO in the Netherlands and Dreamia for Portugal and the Portuguese-speaking markets in Africa.

A deal with French streamer Salto and pubcaster France TV was announced last October.

Based on the books of the same name by Robin L LaFevers, Theodosia is set in 1906 and centres on a smart, bold 14-year-old girl called Theodosia and her adventures combining magic and Egyptology. The show debuted on HBO Max in the US last month.

Katharina Pietzsch, junior director at ZDF Studios, who brokered the deal with the BBC, said: “After our hugely successful collaboration with BBC colleagues on previous projects such as Wolfblood, Heirs of the Night and The Worst Witch, we are very excited to partner with them on Theodesia as well.”

“Theodosia charmed buyers from the outset when we presented the first episode during our official launch last Mipcom,” said Monica Levy, head of sales at Federation Kids & Family, adding that the “cinematic quality as well as engaging storylines, setting and magic… has an allure for the whole family.”
